Roadmap: The Visual Map of Your Product's Evolution
A product roadmap is a strategic communication tool that outlines the high-level vision and direction of a product over time. It functions as a visual map that aligns the internal team, stakeholders (such as board members and investors), and sometimes even customers, on where the product is headed and why. Unlike a project plan, which focuses on specific tasks, deadlines, and deliverables (the “how”), the roadmap focuses on the strategy and business objectives to be achieved with the product's evolution (the “what” and the “why”).
A good roadmap is typically organized around themes or objectives, rather than a list of features. Instead of saying, “We will build features X, Y, and Z,” a thematic roadmap would state, “In the next quarter, our focus will be on ‘Improving the New User Onboarding Experience’.” The specific functionalities to be built to achieve this objective (such as a new guided tour or tutorial videos) are decided later, during the development team's planning. This approach empowers the team and allows them to find the best solution to the problem, rather than just executing a predefined task list.
The roadmap is a living document. It's not set in stone. The market changes, competitors launch new features, and customers provide feedback. The roadmap needs to be flexible enough to adapt to these learnings. Generally, it is more detailed for the short term (the next quarter, for example) and more directional and less specific for the long term (the next year). The primary function of the roadmap is to facilitate communication and ensure everyone is aligned. It helps to say “no” to ideas and requests that, while seemingly good in isolation, do not contribute to the strategic objectives defined at the moment.
Example in an entrepreneur's routine:
The CEO of “AprendaJá,” an online education platform, needs to present the product's evolution vision for the next year to the board of investors. She doesn't present a list of 200 features. Instead, she presents a thematic roadmap:
Product Roadmap - AprendaJá
1st Quarter: Focus on Acquisition and Engagement
- Theme: Make the platform more viral and social.
- Possible Initiatives: Creation of a student ranking system, achievement badges, functionality to create and share study groups.
2nd Quarter: Focus on Retention and LTV
- Theme: Increase perceived value and personalize the experience.
- Possible Initiatives: Launch of a writing module with AI correction, personalized learning paths based on student performance.
3rd Quarter: Focus on Revenue Expansion
- Theme: Create new revenue streams with complementary products.
- Possible Initiatives: Launch of a private tutoring service with platform teachers (marketplace model), sale of e-books and summaries.
4th Quarter: Focus on Scalability and Efficiency
- Theme: Prepare the platform for the next level of growth.
- Possible Initiatives: Infrastructure migration to a new cloud provider, database optimization, automation of support processes.
With this roadmap, the CEO can clearly communicate her strategy. Investors understand the logic behind the product's evolution: first, bring in more users; second, retain them longer; third, sell more to them; and fourth, ensure that the technology supports growth. The roadmap aligns everyone around a shared vision and serves as a guide for the tactical decisions the product team will make each quarter.
