A blank template knows nothing about your business

Downloading a business plan template solves the formatting in two minutes — and hands back to you, untouched, the part that was actually hard.

What the template delivers

The template solves the table of contents. The rest is still yours.

There is a business plan template for every situation: in Word, in Excel, in PDF, free or paid, twelve pages or sixty. They all deliver the same thing, and they deliver it well: an index. Executive summary, market analysis, operating plan, financial projections — the right chapters, in the right order. That has real value, and it is only fair to say so.

The trouble starts when you open the file. The template knows there is a chapter called “Market Analysis”. It does not know what your market is, who is already competing for your customer, how much that person tends to spend, or how many of them walk past your door. All of that is still your work — and it is exactly the work that made the plan hard before you downloaded anything.

What stays blank

The four questions no template answers

If you cannot answer them yet, the template will not help. If you can, you probably did not need it.

  1. 1

    What does opening actually cost?

The template has a line called “initial investment”. It does not have the list of what belongs in it, nor what usually gets left out: working capital for the first months, registration fees, the renovation that overruns, opening inventory. The line exists; the number is yours, and nobody checks whether it is complete.

  2. 2

How much do you sell in month one?

The spreadsheet accepts any number you type. It does not ask where that number came from, does not compare it with the size of your location or the average ticket in your area, and does not warn you when the projection implies serving more customers than your opening hours allow.

  3. 3

In which month does cash turn positive?

Payback, IRR and NPV sometimes arrive as cells with formulas already in them. But if you change the selling price in chapter 4, nothing in chapter 7 moves on its own. The file does not connect the two ends, because it is not a model of your business: it is a document about business in general.

  4. 4

And if you sell 30% less?

It is the first question any bank, investor or partner asks. A blank template carries no downside scenario, does not recalculate the break-even point and has no answer ready. Most people find the answer out after opening the doors.

What happens in practice

The field everyone fills in the same way

What the template asks for

“Competitive advantages”

A free-text field, with no instruction, no example and no standard to meet.

What usually gets written

“Quality and good service”

Attributes any competitor on the same street would write into their own plan, word for word.

Advantages actually identified

None

Val's assessment
An advantage your competitor can also claim is not an advantage. Before moving on, name at least three direct competitors, what each one charges and what each one fails to deliver — your advantage usually lives in that last column.

Where to start

The template is not the problem. The blank is.

To be fair

A good business plan template is useful: it shows what cannot be missing and stops you forgetting an entire chapter.

But structure was never the hard part. The hard part is knowing what it costs to open, how much you sell in the first month, in which month cash turns positive and what happens if you sell less than you hoped — and no blank file answers that for you.

On Vibz, every stage arrives with guidance, context and examples that apply to your business, the numbers recalculate themselves when an assumption changes, and Val reviews what you built before your money is on the line.
